Swimming Officials: time to renew your membership -- Now is the time to renew your San Diego-Imperial/USA Swimming membership for 2009. Contact the SI Swim Office for the registration form and if you have any questions. New online officials test -- Official's chair Phil Cook has sent along instructions for using USA Swimming's new online officials test. Click here for the instructions. NTV procedures -- We've posted a page titled National Times Verification/Observed Meets, which is designed to provide a summary of the procedures which must be followed and copies of the forms which must be completed for times from a meet conducted under other than USA Swimming technical rules (for example, a high school or college meet) to be acceptable for USA Swimming purposes and to be taken into USA Swimming's National Times database. If you have questions, SI Swimming's National Times verification officer is Dean Bailey 2008 USA Swimming rulebook -- You can download a PDF copy of the the 2008 USA Swimming Rules and Regulations. "On the Same Page" section created on USA Swimming web site -- A section titled "On the Same Page" has been added to the USA Swimming web site. Its focus will be on news items and issues of interest to the officiating community. Its goal is to provide all officials with the information, resources, forms, etc. to help all officials be "on the same page" when it comes to swim officiating. Follow this link to the "On the Same Page" page, and if you have suggestions, comments, or questions in relation to the section, send them to onthesamepage@optonline.net. If you have a specific situation you'd like to propose for discussion on the page, send it to situations@optonline.net. Rule differences -- It's always a good time to review Swimming Rules: Common Elements and Differences (as of May 17, 2004), which charts the similarities and differences between USA Swimming, FINA, college, high school, YMCA, and Masters swimming rules. A great resource for officials -- If you haven't seen it, the USA Swimming Officials page is a tremendous resource for officials and others interested in rules, rule interpretations, and the craft of officiating. We're always looking -- San Diego Imperial Swimming is always looking for volunteers who are interested in becoming deck officials. While there are officials clinics in each of our five zones at various times during the year much of the training is on the job. Novice officials generally start as stroke and turn officials, and learn the ropes by attending clinics, using self-study materials, and working on deck under the supervision of an experienced official. Those who are interested move up the ladder to serving as a chief judge, then to refereeing and starting -- again, learning through a combination of clinics, self-study materials, and on-the-job training. Sound interesting? Contact the officials chairman for your zone for more information on getting started as an official in your area. For a brief description of the various officiating positions, please take a look at the attached brochure. In gaining your certification as a SI official, there are
certain steps that must be followed. As previously mentioned,
the first is attendance at a basic Stroke and Turn Judge
clinic. During the clinic you may take a written open book
test, or you may take the test at home after the clinic. This
test may also be completed online by going to the
OFFICIALS
ONLINE TEST SITE , and completing the test. You will
receive your score immediately, and a copy will be
automatically forwarded to the SI Official's Chair. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any member of the SI Officials Committee or your team coach for additional information. Test Taking Options There are two choices for taking tests. The preferred option is take the test online. The test will automatically be scored, the correct responses to the questions that you missed will be reported, and the results forwarded to the Regional Officials Chairs. You may also take the pencil and paper version of the test. If you elect this option, the answer sheet should be mailed to your Regional Officials Chaiperson (addresses are listed on the "Officials Committee" page. With either option, you must include the rules reference in your response. Please note that individual files for each of the test are no longer available, thus the downloaded files will contain the tests for all officiating positions On-Line Officials Test The new testing facility is live and available for use by all LSC's and officials. Information has been sent to all LSC Officials Chairs about how the facility works and how to gain access to the site for LSC certification testing. Among the features of the test facility is the ability to start the test, save it and continue it at a later date. A copy of the test can be printed, completed off-line and then the answers can be entered at a later date to be graded. Click here to visit the Online test facility. (When taking an online test, please enter the name of your Officials Chairperson (Phil Cook) for the "Clinic Code". Paper Version of Test
