From RSD Swimming:  First of all, our thoughts are with all of the families that have been evacuated or displaced in the tragic fires in San Diego County. We send our best wishes especially to those of you who have lost their homes in the fires.

Due to the poor air quality, damage, and displacement of many San Diego families from the fires, the RSD A/B/C meet scheduled for October 27 & 28 has officially been re-scheduled for the following weekend, November 3 & 4, 2007.  All warm up and start times will remain the same. The meet is closed to new entries. USA Swimming Invites Athletes to New Diversity Select Camp
USA Swimming announced today the new Diversity Select Camp. The goal of the camp is to create more opportunities for the development of outstanding athletes from diverse backgrounds. The camp will be April 27-30 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“This camp represents an enormous opportunity for the sport of swimming to promote diversity and to increase the number of multicultural role models and heroes in the sport,” said Pat Hogan, USA Swimming Club Development Director. “Athletes such as Byron Davis, Maritza Correia and Cullen Jones are already great ambassadors for the sport, and we hope to create even more champions and leaders to promote change.  “Consistent with our ‘Build the Base’ core objective, this program is the beginning of a long-term and concerted effort to address obstacles that historically have made it difficult for children from diverse backgrounds to get involved and stay with the sport of swimming.”

USA Swimming will accept applications from athletes 13-18 years old at the time of the camp. Eligible athletes are those who meet the qualification time standards and who represent an ethnic group that is less than 20 percent of the current USA Swimming membership, including: African American, Hispanic, Asian or Pacific Islander or Native American. View the selection criteria and additional camp information online.  The deadline for application is March 20. Thirty athletes (15 boys and 15 girls) will be selected from the pool of applicants, with all expenses being covered by USA Swimming. Interested swimmers can access the 2006 Diversity Select Camp application online.

In addition to offering a leadership component for the athletes, the Diversity Camp will also invite and include an educational track for the personal coaches of each athlete.  For more information, please contact Kim Holmes, USA Swimming Sport Development Consultant/Western Zone, at (719) 866-3520 or kholmes@usaswimming.org.

Selection Policy for the San Diego All-Star Team Clarified
In order for a San Diego-Imperial Swimmer to qualify for the All-Star team, the swimmer must participate in the SDI Q meet January 6-8, 2006. The swimmer must also be a registered swimming for the 2006 year with San Diego Imperial Swimming. Swimmers must complete and turn in an application with the required money to Mary Redmond, meet director, by the established deadline, by the end of the meet on Saturday January 7, 2006. Swimmers must be available to swim both days of the dual meet to be considered.  The following criteria will be used for the selection of the team:

  1. Swimmers who win two individual events will automatically be selected to the team.
  2. Swimmers who win one event will be selected if there are not eight (8) swimmers in the age group who qualify automatically.
  3. Swimmers who score the most amount of points based off of there performance in the swimmer’s top three events per day and top six events for the meet. The scoring that will be used is the championship scoring through sixteenth (16th) place. This selection will be used if there are not eight (8) swimmers qualified from the first criteria.

Swimmers may swim any number of events at the Q meet up to five (5) events per day. The 1000 free on Friday night will not be considered in the selection of the team. All events on Saturday and Sunday will be used in the selection of the team. There will be eight (8) swimmers per age group; 10-under, 11-12, 13-14, & 15-18 girls and boys. Swimmers who ages up between the Q meet and the dual meet will have their times included in their new age group at the conclusion of the meet.  Any question can be directed to Sean Redmond, head coach, at 760-728-9244 or by e-mail seanmary@aol.com.

Flash! Dave Denniston Takes First Steps! -- November 17, 2005
By Phillip Whitten

Former Auburn captain and NCAA champion Dave Denniston, paralyzed from the waist down in a sledding accident in Wyoming last February, took a giant step forward in his rehabilitation yesterday. Actually, it was 76 giant steps.

Appearing at a benefit for Project Walk in Carlsbad, California, where he is undergoing rehabilitation, Dave took 76 steps with the aid of a walker. A typical swimmer, he noted: “It took me six-and-a-half minutes.” No doubt when he makes it to 100 steps, he’ll establish a “record,” then try to beat it each time he walks.

It was less than a month ago that Dave took his first, very tentative step (using a walker) and it was sideways. So, buoyed by the support and love of his family, friends, coaches, teammates and thousands of supporters, he has made absolutely phenomenal progress.

Open Water Swimming To Be Added To Olympic Program In 2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  – The International Olympic Committee Executive Board announced today that it will add the men’s and women’s 10K open water races to the Olympic program in Beijing. The decision comes on the heels of a number of requests made by the international federations of various Olympic sports.

“The addition of open water to the competition program at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is an exciting development for our sport,” said Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming’s Executive Director. “We are especially happy for our athletes, coaches and advocates who have worked so hard and who have dreamed of this day.  “I have personally always viewed open water as swimming’s corollary to what the marathon is to Track & Field. The event is unique, and it will offer up an entirely new side of competitive swimming to everyone who watches the Olympic Games.”

When it comes to open water swimming, the Europeans, specifically Italy and Russia, and the Australians have always been the top federations. We will have a great challenge ahead of us, but I believe we can rise to the occasion,” said Everett Uchiyama, USA Swimming’s National Team Director.  “We know that China will host a fantastic event, particularly because open water swimming has been a part of their history. We’re looking forward to a wonderful competition.”

It is still not known whether the addition of the open water event will affect the number of pool swimmers on the Olympic roster. That number is currently capped at 52. The selection criteria for U.S. open water swimmers have not yet been determined.  “Certainly, there are still many questions to be asked and answered before we fully understand the challenges and opportunities associated with the inclusion of open water onto the Olympic competition program,” Wielgus said. “As we work through these issues, we will keep our membership and others informed. But today, let’s celebrate.”

In other news related to the IOC Executive Board’s decisions, the international swimming federation’s (FINA) request for the inclusion of the men’s and women’s 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke has been denied.

Officials needed for the 2005 Speedo Champions Series Summer Championship, in Clovis, California.
This meet will take place on July 21-24, 2005.  Even though the deadline is almost passed, tomorrow is the deadline for non-assigned deck positions, your help would be most welcome.  We only have had 16 officials apply for an assigned position and only 9 of these officials were planning to work the four days of the meet.  We need more officials to work the deck at this meet so that the swimmers, coaches and officials will have National Championship conditions.  With the many entries that are arriving, we will probably have to use both ends of the pool for the preliminary competition.  More officials are needed to run this type of meet, so if you have been putting off sending your application, it isn't too late.  The application says that July 5, 2005 is the deadline for non-assigned deck positions, so please fax your application to Shawn Holbrook at (559) 264-1715.

If you can't send or fax the application form to Shawn Holbrook, let me know of your plans and what sessions you can work.  So far, we are not represented by all of the LSC's that are going to be attending this meet.  Please help us out by coming to Clovis and helping out your friends at this Open Speedo Champions Series Summer Championship.  So far, we have had 2 officials from Pacific Swimming apply, 9 officials from Central California Swimming apply and 5 officials from Sierra Nevada Swimming apply.

Sincerely,  Bill Rose, Head Referee   (916) 482-7743

P.S.  Coaches, please pass this sincere request on to your club's officials.
